Curse of Strahd
Under raging storm clouds, a lone figure stands silhouetted against the ancient walls of Castle Ravenloft. The vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich stares down a sheer cliff at the village below. A cold, bitter wind spins dead leaves about him, billowing his cape in the darkness.
Lightning splits the clouds overhead, casting stark white light across him. Strahd turns to the sky, revealing the angular muscles of his face and hands. He has a look of power—and of madness. His once handsome face is contorted by a tragedy darker than the night itself.
Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The wind’s howling increases as Strahd turns his gaze back to the village. Far below, yet not beyond his ken, a party of adventurers has just entered his domain. Strahd’s face forms a twisted smile as his dark plan unfolds. He knew they were coming, and he knows why they have come—all according to his plan. He, the master of Ravenloft, will attend to them.
Another lightning flash rips through the darkness, its thunder echoing through the castle’s towers. But Strahd is gone. Only the howling of the wind—or perhaps a lone wolf—fills the midnight air. The master of Ravenloft is having guests for dinner. And you are invited.
-Curse of Strahd Introduction
Curse of Strahd is a gothic horror campaign set in D&D's Shadowfell. This campaign is an adventure for a party of four to six characters of levels 1–10. The adventure takes your party into the realm of Barovia, a lost valley, shrouded in mists. Barovia is home to the Vampire Lord, Count Strahd Von Zarovich. As master of his domain, Strahd has terrorized the citizens of Barovia for centuries. All live in constant fear of the dread lord whose machinations extend beyond just a desire to control the lost valley.
Adventurers start there quest by entering the realm, where they soon find that they cannot leave, not without Strahd’s permission. The quest then becomes a game of cat and mouse, as Strahd uses his resources and minions to target the newly arrived adventurers. Their only hope is to find some way to destroy Strahd and escape the mists of the Shadowfell. Will they also bring peace to the land? Will they end Strahd’s curse as Barovia’s never-ending tormentor? That remains to be seen.
Curse of Strahd is a fantastic introduction to DND and has many elements that can be used to accentuate the gameplay or tone it down, depending on player preference and experience. I’ve run the Curse of Strahd campaign numerous times, and with each run, there are new and exciting things for players to discover and react to. Additionally, I add content from outside sources that add to Strahd’s backstory and the overall experience of Barovia as whole.
The rich, beautiful, and horrifying landscape of Barovia is presented using specifically designed graphics from Tabletop Simulator. Tabletop Simulator is not needed to play.
